Abstract

ow does the church come from Jesus? Previously, this was a much clearer and more settled question. It could be answered from dogmatic conclusions, rather than from historical investigation. Since the methodological revolutions in Catholic theology of the twentieth century that initiated hermeneutical processes of self-discovery, potential answers to this question are far less stable and comprehensive. The recovery of past elements of tradition and the uncertainty of the future demand creative answers to the challenges facing the church regarding its identity. This volume, prepared in honor of Bernard P. Prusak, attempts to constructively explore the question of ‘how’ the church comes from Jesus. The contributors have provided critical reflections from different theological disciplines in order to think this question anew from a more ‘synoptic’ perspective in line with Prusak’s own theology. His work consistently plumbs the depths of Christian history and traditions, alive to the liturgical and sacramental life of the Body of Christ, to address the concerns of Christians seeking understanding of their faith today. This volume is comprised of fifteen chapters across two parts, including contributions from four generations of theologians associated with Prusak and his theology. Part I investigates the identity of the church and what it means to encounter God’s revelation in history. It features contributions from biblical, liturgical, and systematic theologians on topics ranging from scriptural metaphors to receptions of the Second Vatican Council. Part II seeks to apply critically the principles of faith to the morally complex, ever-changing contemporary world. Contributions here explore systematic considerations of Prusak’s ecclesiology in dialogue with Pope Francis’s concept of mercy, the role of women in the church, ecclesial power structures, grace, and the future of the ‘church unfinished’.

Abstract

In the face of religious and cultural diversity, some doubt whether Christian faith remains possible today. Critics claim that religion is irrational and violent, and the loudest defenders of Christianity are equally strident. In response, Desire, Faith, and the Darkness of God: Essays in Honor of Denys Turner explores the uncertainty essential to Christian commitment; it suggests that faith is moved by a desire for that which cannot be known. This approach is inspired by the tradition of Christian apophatic theology, which argues that language cannot capture divine transcendence. From this perspective, contemporary debates over God’s existence represent a dead end: if God is not simply another object in the world, then faith begins not in abstract certainty but in a love that exceeds the limits of knowledge. The essays engage classic Christian thought alongside literary and philosophical sources ranging from Pseudo-Dionysius and Dante to Karl Marx and Jacques Derrida. Building on the work of Denys Turner, they indicate that the boundary between atheism and Christian thought is productively blurry. Instead of settling the stale dispute over whether religion is rationally justified, their work suggests instead that Christian life is an ethical and political practice impassioned by a God who transcends understanding. Abstract

With this Festschrift colleagues and friends honor Terrence Merrigan on the occasion of his retirement from the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, KU Leuven. The thirty-two contributions in this volume all show the exceptional quality of his research in different domains of theological study. Since the theology of John Henry Newman has inspired Terrence Merrigan throughout his entire career, the volume opens with a number of outstanding studies on various aspects of Newman's theology: his interaction with high church Anglicanism, his understanding of conscience, the theology of purgatory, but also the neglect of liturgical spirituality in Newman's theology. The contributions in the second part are devoted to the fields of Christology and Trinity, which comprise Merrigan's favorite theological disciplines. The contributions are situated on the intersection of contemporary Christology and its soteriological impact within a pluralistic and secularized context. The third part deals with the theology of interreligious dialogue, with special focus on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, Jacques Dupuis's theology of religions, comparative theology, Jewish and Christian approaches to interreligious dialogue, and the phenomenon of double religious belonging. The fourth part explores the challenging relationship between faith and culture in an attempt to bridge the Christian tradition with the contemporary world. The present volume makes a distinguished and original contribution to these four important fields of theological research.

Abstract

David Brown (b. 1948) is a Scottish Episcopal priest and theologian whose work covers a vast terrain spanning methodological divisions between philosophy, Christian theology, religious studies, the arts and culture. Early work on the Trinity and Incarnation led to a Newman-inspired articulation of Scripture as tradition, and, related to this, the exploration of tradition as revelation with reference to a wide range of human experience. Moving from materially-mediated divine presence to culturally-mediated revelation, Brown’s phenomenology of religious experience amounts to a transformed natural religion along sacramental lines. Essays in this volume consider Brown’s wide ranging and generative contributions in three parts: 1) Reason, Faith & Tradition, 2) Incarnation & Trinity, and 3) Sacramentality & the Arts, with a concluding response from Brown himself that addresses ‘religious experience and revelation’, as well as ‘secular culture and religious distinctiveness’.
